The Make-Up of Nasdaq

"Nasdaq is completly automated and uses the best technological advances in telecommunications and computers. There are two main headquarters for the Nasdaq Market. The Central Computer Complex is in Trumbull, Connecticut and there is a National Association of Securities Dealers Operation Center in Rockville, Maryland which contains a full backup of the Central Computer Complex. There are nearly 80,000 miles of leased telephone lines connecting 3,400 trading terminals. Nasdaq also uses market makers instead of regular stock brokers. On average there are nine market makers for each security listing. For the most active listings there could be as many as forty market makers for each listing, depending on security activity. Currently there are over 5,400 companies each meeting Nasdaq requirements. Also about 46% of shares traded daily in the securities markets are traded on the Nasdaq markets. There are about 800 technology companies listed on Nasdaq which hold 16% of the total Nasdaq market and 41% of the market's total capitalization.
